Google Fires at Apple, Integrates Flash Into Chrome Browser

Google continues to stake its territory online. The search-and-advertising giant announced Tuesday that it will bundle Adobe’s Flash player with downloads of the Chrome browser, putting Google in sharper opposition to Apple — and giving Adobe a powerful ally.
Google’s decision to throw its weight behind Flash is an attempt to protect its turf — the internet — and strengthen its Android and Chrome operating systems for mobile phones, tablets and notebooks. By contrast, Apple’s iPhone and upcoming iPad do not support Flash.
“Integrating Flash into Chrome is more of a signaling and partnership thing than anything else,” says Michael Coté, analyst at RedMonk, a research firm that focuses on strategy and developer-related issues. “After all, anyone who wants to get Flash can otherwise download it.”
A mere 5 percent of internet users run the Chrome browser today. But Google’s dominance as a search engine and advertising network gives it both money and clout. The company’s free, open source Android operating system is targeted at mobile phones and has already become popular with smartphone makers such as Motorola, HTC and Sony Ericsson. Separately, Google is planning to release Chrome OS, a new operating system for netbooks and tablets based on the Chrome browser.
In that context, Google’s embrace of Adobe Flash has far greater significance than the browser’s market share would indicate.
Once partners, now rivals, the competition between Apple and Google has intensified over the last few months. In January, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Google’s “don’t be evil” mantra was “bullshit” and cast aspersions on Adobe Flash for being buggy. Earlier this month, Apple filed a lawsuit against smartphone maker HTC, a close partner of Google, alleging that HTC violated several patents related to the iPhone hardware and interface. Some industry watchers construe Apple’s lawsuit as an indirect attack on Google, whose Android OS powers HTC’s latest phone Nexus One.
But Jobs and Google CEO Eric Schmidt have recently been seen in public together, and the iPhone still utilizes Google services like Maps, indicating that the relationship between the two companies is not completely severed.
Flash will be the first plug-in that’s not from Google’s stable to be amalgamated into the browser, says a Google spokesperson. “This will make Flash on the browser a seamless experience,” says the spokesperson, “so you will see performance benefits and use of fewer resources. A lot of the controls and shortcuts will work better and Flash will truly feel like a part of the browser.”
Flash on Chrome
In winning Google’s support for Flash, Adobe has found a powerful godfather for its technology. Apple decision to not include Flash for the iPhone and the iPad tablet has set the stage for the rise of HTML5, an open standard that Apple backs.
Already, video distribution platforms like Brightcove are trying to offer choices to publishers who want to reach Flash-less viewers. Brightcove, which provides online video backend systems for many websites including Wired.com, has introduced a product based on HTML5 so websites can continue to serve video, even if a visitor’s browser doesn’t support Flash.
For Adobe, working with browser companies may be one way of preserving Flash’s dominance.
“Our goal is to make the Flash API platform-neutral,” says Paul Betlem, senior director for Flash player engineering at Adobe. “We want to pull in the participation of all browser vendors and even other API vendors.”
Adobe says it is talking to Firefox and IE but it seems unlikely to find any backing from them.
“We don’t have any current plans to bundle Flash with Firefox downloads,” says Chris Blizzard, open source evangelist for Mozilla. “We’ve always made it easy to install Flash via our automatic plugin finder service, which has been part of Firefox for years.”
Betlem says that may not be enough for developers. Integrating Flash into the browser makes both the browser and Flash more powerful, he says. “Some of the problems developers are identifying with the current plug-in system is that all the key events that browser has access to is shared with the plug-in,” he says. “This allows web developers and users a more powerful and consistent experience.”
Future of the Internet
Ultimately, the Apple-Google rivalry comes down to the future of the web and Google’s place in it, says Coté. Through the iPhone and iPad, Apple is increasingly creating a “walled garden” where content and games need to be approved by Apple and accessed through its app store. Meanwhile, it is trying to control how the internet develops by deciding which technologies it will support on its devices — yes to HTML5, no to Flash.
For Google, that’s a future that can directly threaten its revenue stream, since Google’s business model is built on the openness and anarchy of the public internet.
“Strategically, it is not in Google’s interest to supplant an existing platform with a new one,” says Coté. “The way Google makes its revenues is with the web completely open. If Apple starts controlling access to content then it would make it very difficult for Google to find ways to insert itself into the system.”
Google and Adobe say that decision to integrate Flash with Chrome is for now limited to the browser for PCs. But the duo are working together to offer the latest version of the Flash player on Android mobile phones.
At the Mobile World Congress, Adobe demonstrated the latest version of Flash on Android devices. It hasn’t said exactly when it will be offered to users, but Betlem says “Google is very supportive” of the technology.
“I don’t believe the plans are finalized on the exact distribution of Flash players on Android-based devices,” says Betlem. “But my expectation is that there will be a seamless experience for installing Flash players on smartphones, though it will ultimately be a device manufacturer’s choice rather than Google’s.”
It would help Google strengthen its position a pro-choice company and position itself as an alternative to Apple. After all, in the smartphone business, the lines are becoming increasingly clear. It’s the iPhone vs. other platforms.
“When it comes to Android, the idea is that you will have the complete web instead of the blue-box web that Apple is offering,” he says. “So, obviously Google is interested in having Flash around and increasing the access to it.”
Google’s Flash support also doesn’t mean that it will not back HTML5. “Google has never claimed to be an open source company,” he says. “What they have claimed to offer is choices and alternatives.”
Support for Flash in the Chrome browser will also help Google’s plans to put its operating system on tablets. Last month, mock-ups from Google showed the company is planning to partner with gadget manufacturers to introduce tablets that could potentially challenge the iPad.

10 minutos para decir algo con un poco de sentido
La historia de los seres humanos, pintada de tantos colores por nosotros mismos, vista desde afuera (si es que eso es posible) me causa una profunda molestia.
Siento que desde aquí, mi apatía colabora más a que las cosas esenciales de los mal llamados humanos se desvanezcan. No se admite fácil que soy tan responsable como quien inculca el machismo, al no oponerme a su práctica de manera frontal, sólo po decir, ¿Cuántos males más me habré hecho consciente y sigo inmovil ante su existencia?
Hoy más que nunca siento mi pecho asfixiado por la responsabilidad de saber que mi respuesta ha sido esteril ante los compromisos de nosotros los humanos, que 23 años me tomó hacer consciencia.
No sólo sería incongruente con mi saber, sino tambien con mi bienestar, seguir aquí reposando injustamente en mi costado.
¿Cómo superar el shock de la realidad y convertirlo en una razón preponderante para cambiar un estilo de vida, y no volverse ciegos e insensible, ante lo único que nos mantiene siendo humanos?

La pena de muerte en 2009: Amnistía Internacional desafía el secretismo de China
Como miembro de Amnistia y además porque me interesa que este mensaje sea difundido, comparto con todos lo que gusten leerlo, la labor que se ha hecho en materia de pena de muerte en China y lo delicado del tema. Amnistía Internacional ha desafiado hoy a las autoridades chinas a revelar el número de personas que ejecutan y condenan a muerte con motivo de la publicación de su análisis sobre la pena de muerte en el mundo en 2009.
El informe, titulado Condenas a muerte y ejecuciones en 2009, revela que al menos 714 personas fueron ejecutadas en 18 países y al menos 2.001 personas fueron condenadas a muerte en 56 países el año pasado.
Estos datos no incluyen los varios miles de ejecuciones que con toda probabilidad se llevaron a cabo en China, donde la información sobre la pena de muerte sigue siendo secreto de Estado.
Para poner en evidencia la falta de transparencia de China, Amnistía Internacional ha decidido no publicar sus propios datos mínimos sobre condenas a muerte y ejecuciones en China en 2009. Los cálculos basados en la información que existe a disposición del público reflejan muy por debajo el verdadero número de personas que el Estado ha matado o condenado a morir.
“La pena de muerte es cruel y degradante, y constituye una afrenta a la dignidad humana” ha afirmado Claudio Cordone, secretario general provisional de Amnistía Internacional.
“Las autoridades chinas aseguran que se están llevando a cabo menos ejecuciones. Si eso es verdad, ¿por qué no dicen al mundo a cuántas personas ejecuta el Estado?”
La investigación de Amnistía Internacional demuestra que los países que todavía cometen ejecuciones son la excepción y no la norma. Además de China, los principales Estados ejecutores fueron Irán, con un mínimo de 388 ejecuciones, Irak, con un mínimo de 120, Arabia Saudí, con un mínimo de 69, y Estados Unidos, con 52.
En 2009, la pena capital se aplicó profusamente en China, Irán y Sudán para enviar mensajes políticos, acallar la oposición o promover programas políticos, según el informe de Amnistía Internacional.
En Irán se sabe que se llevaron a cabo 112 ejecuciones en las ocho semanas transcurridas desde las elecciones presidenciales del 12 de junio hasta la investidura de Mahmud Ahmadineyad, el 5 de agosto, para cumplir su segundo mandato de presidente.
En el informe se aborda el carácter discriminatorio del uso de la pena de muerte en 2009, impuesta de manera desproporcionada a personas pobres, pertenecientes a minorías o a comunidades étnicas y religiosas, a menudo después de juicios manifiestamente injustos.
Con todo, las cifras también demuestran que en 2009 el mundo prosiguió su avance hacia la abolición. El número de países que han eliminado por completo la pena capital de su legislación se elevó a 95 cuando Burundi y Togo abolieron la pena de muerte para todos los delitos.
Por primera vez desde que Amnistía Internacional documenta los datos sobre la pena de muerte en el mundo, no hubo ejecuciones en Europa en 2009. Bielorrusia es el único país de la región que sigue aplicando esta pena. En toda América, Estados Unidos fue el único país que llevó a cabo ejecuciones.
“El número de países que realizan ejecuciones es menor que nunca. Como ya sucedió con la esclavitud y con la práctica del apartheid, el mundo rechaza semejante oprobio para la humanidad –señaló Claudio Cordone–. Cada vez nos acercamos más a un mundo libre de la pena de muerte pero, hasta ese día, debemos oponernos a cada ejecución prevista.”

Sólo se tuvo conocimiento de otros siete países que habían llevado a cabo ejecuciones en 2009 –Bangladesh, Corea del Norte, Japón, Malaisia, Singapur, Tailandia y Vietnam–, con 26 ejecuciones conocidas.

No hubo ejecuciones en Europa en 2009. Bielorrusia sigue siendo el único país de la región que aplica la pena de muerte. Aunque no se ejecutó a nadie en este país ex soviético en 2009, el Estado bielorruso ha dado muerte a dos personas en marzo de 2010.
En el África subsahariano sólo dos países llevaron a cabo ejecuciones: Botsuana y Sudán. La mayor conmutación masiva de penas de muerte que ha conocido Amnistía Internacional tuvo lugar en Kenia, donde el gobierno anunció que se conmutaría la pena capital por pena de cárcel a más de 4.000 condenados.

No hubo ejecuciones en Europa en 2009. Bielorrusia sigue siendo el único país de la región que aplica la pena de muerte. Aunque no se ejecutó a nadie en este país ex soviético en 2009, el Estado bielorruso ha dado muerte a dos personas en marzo de 2010.
En el África subsahariano sólo dos países llevaron a cabo ejecuciones: Botsuana y Sudán. La mayor conmutación masiva de penas de muerte que ha conocido Amnistía Internacional tuvo lugar en Kenia, donde el gobierno anunció que se conmutaría la pena capital por pena de cárcel a más de 4.000 condenados.

El papel que juega la guerra en la cultura americana es trascendental. Y todos los días esta tradición bélica se sigue transmitiendo, y miles de jóvenes americanos, (e incluso de otras nacionalidades) se alistan en las filas de la armada americana, ya sea por una torcida interpretación del aún más torcido concepto de nacionalismo, o por la necesidad de labrarse un porvenir, dadas las limitadas condiciones de oportunidad que tienen.
Y de esa manera arriegando su vida por convicción o por la idea un mejor futuro, apoyan sin saberlo causas, que al final, tienen su origen en los intereses económicos de emrpesas productoras de armas, petroleras, o contratistas multinacionales dedicadas a reconstruir ciudades destrozadas por la guerra.
Me parece interesante que una banda americana, tenga la intención, (al menos) de expresar su sentir ante un tema tan delicado para una cultura tan conservadora como la estadounidense.

Estoy en la UNAM (la crónica)
Un día en la oficina como a eso de las 4:00 pm decidí que quería hacer una segunda carrera, ¿Porqué no? me dije a mi mismo. Es cierto que ya había contemplado en mi mente la idea de hacer una segunda carrera en una disciplina que tanto me interesa como la Filosofía. Pero desde diciembre, que fue mi graduación realmente no había hecho nada por buscar como llevar a cabo dicho proyecto.
De esa manera entré a la pagina de la UNAM y comencé a buscar fechas y tiempos, etc. etc, las diferentes opciones, el plan de estudios y demás. Ese mismo día me enteré que el examen de la UNAM era famoso por ser muy difícil que debía prepararme, de manera completamente fortuita, mi amigo y profesor de Filosofía de la prepa Lutz Keferstein, ha quien mando un afectuoso saludo y aprovecho para agradecerle por asistir a mi fiesta de cumpleaños, se conectó al Facebook y le conté que había tomado la decisión de hacer una segunda carrera, de igual forma le pregunté si el consideraba necesario que tomara un curso de preparación para el examen de admisión y me recomendó a un amigo suyo, Miguel Cuellar, también profesor de Filosofía y de Historia quien estaba impartiendo precisamente un curso para el examen de admisión de aquel febrero.
Llamé a Miguel y resultó que el curso había comenzando justo un día antes (esto sucedía un martes). Entonces pedí permiso en mi chamba para irme a las 5 pm en punto (cosa que ya no sucede desde un bueeeen rato). Y me lancé a Coyoacán a buscar el Barrio de San Lucas. y así comenzó el curso en un salones pequeñísimos, no recuerdo nunca en mi vida haber tomado clase en salones tan pequeños. Y así fueron dos semanas, la verdad y espero mis compañeros del CREA estén de acuerdo conmigo, memorables, para ellos no eran tan divertido, porque la mayoría estaba viendo lo mismo en la prepa, pero para mí, que hace 4 años y medio había dejado la prepa, tomar clases de Historia, Biología y Física, era como subirme a una maquina del tiempo y volver a recordar cosas que hacía años no estudiaba. Además conocí personas increíbles, tanto alumnos como profesores, excelentísimas personas, hicieron esas tardes/noches de estudio de Lunes a Sábado bastante llevaderas.
Finalmente llegó el día de mi examen y ¿Porqué no? olvidé en mi casa mi Boleta-Credencial. Así que a 25 minutos antes del examen tuvimos que encontrar una papelería para poder re imprimir mi Boleta-Credencial (Cabe señalar que toque el timbre de la casa de una amiga, y dijo que no sabía quien era, no diré quien pero estuvo muy cagado, en ese momento no lo estuvo, fue muy molesto y estresante) finalmente unos 3 minutos antes de que empezáramos a entrar a la escuela que tenía facha de ser primaria y/o Secundaria me formé e hice mi examen.
Después del examen pasó mas o menos un mes y chingo de cosas acontecieron de manera normal en mi vida, que para los intereses de esta narración son totalmente y irrelevantes, hasta el día de ayer por la noche cuando mientras Erick "El Terrible" Morales le puse una excelente madriza a José Alfaro, de Nicaragua, noté que el link de los resultados estaba habilitado y ya... Lo demás ya lo saben.

How to Access Pandora From Anywhere in the World

Pandora and other U.S.-based streaming music services have long since slammed the doors on its international listeners. Its not as if the internet radio stations had a choice. Rather, the xenophobic restrictions are the result of U.S. and international copyright laws and restrictions.
Pandora is reportedly working out international licensing deals. As Tim Westerberg writes in a message to international users, "the pace of global licensing is hard to predict, but we have the ultimate goal of being able to offer our service everywhere."
So how are intercontinental rockers going to dance to Pandora's sweet tunes in the mean time?
Well one solution is to mask your identity by using a proxy server. Pandora blocks users by non-U.S. IP addresses. If you connect to a server in the U.S. and use it as an internet providing middle-man between your PC and Pandora, Pandora won't know the difference. To Pandora's servers, you look like you are the middle-man. Proxies make it possible to rock out to Pandora from anywhere in the world.
Using a proxy to access restrictive web applications on foreign soil isn't just for Pandora. There are web proxies for every state in the United States and almost any country around the world. Hiding behind a proxy's IP means access to foreign music stores and other web sites normally blocked to your area. You can even simulate foreign access, or out-of-LAN access, to your own web projects by utilizing proxies.
So how do you use a proxy? Put on your dancing shoes and let's dig into the wonderful world of proxies.

Violines
es la fiebre que provoca el miedo.
La cama se vuelve enorme,
un remolino incontenible de furía,
es el tiempo que se detiene.
El agua parece fluir tan rápido,
se lleva todo... los aromas se resbalan de las cosas,
son los violines graves y lentos en mi cabeza.
Colores luminosos terroríficos,
las voces de todos me llaman al mismo tiempo,
es la confusión y la nostalgia de la soledad.
Son unas manos, unas miradas,
que pretenden ser familiares pero me asustan,
es la fuerza del tiempo que comienza a avanzar.
La luna creciente parece sonreirme con sarcasmo,

Pedro necesita zapatos para su festival ese de la escuela. mañana me doy un tiempo, pero no sé porque no los compré hoy. Está camioneta necesita urgentemente una buena lavada, hasta el volante se siente pegajoso debajo de los guantes de piel. No recuerdo la ultima vez que dieron las 11 de la noche y me fui a dormir, vaya que mi vida a cambiado en los ultimos años.
¿Que pasaría si algún día nos agarrarán? El Negro dice que nuestros patrones pagan el sueldo de los que supuestamente nos buscan, "Pinche frío". Que nuestra chamba es tan legítima y necesaria para el país como la de ellos, la verdad yo no entiendo nada de esas cosas. La misma rutina una y otra vez. antes uy, era rara la vez que El Negro me hablaba para estas chambas; 5,000 pesos en 2 horas, ni de puta, diría mi carnal El Jonas, pero ahora por lo menos 3 veces por semana venimos a dejar composta.

Me hubiera gustado estudiar para arquitecto, hacer edificios y casas, arreglar desperfectos, tener mi oficina y vacaciones una vez al año, decirle a Pedro que su papá es un hombre trabajador y honesto, sin tener que apretar los dientes.
¡Ya estuvo! con esto acompleto los 300 que necesitaba. Estos dicen que de esto uno no sale, pero tuvieran ojos en todos lados. Mañana a esta hora ya estaré en mi cama, muy lejos de todo este desmadre, que la memoria de mis ojos se vaya borrando y mis chamacos crezcan sanos y contentos.
No creo que haya otra cosa en la vida que haga tan bién como hago esto. ni cuando vendíamos auto partes nos iba tan chingon como me va ahora, además el respeto que nos tienen es invaluable, cualquier chamba hoy en día está cabrona, pero estando de lado correcto, La ciudad de México no es tan insegura.

Antes del Mundial, habrá dos cortes a la lista del Tri - Futbol - mediotiempo.com
No quiso adelantar en qué porcentaje ya tiene definida la convocatoria de los jugadores que representarán a México en el Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010, pero este domingo Javier Aguirre sí se animó a decir cómo irá depurando la lista final, la cual tendrá dos cortes para separar jugadores.
En el arranque de la tercer convocatoria del año, con la que el representativo mexicano se prepara para el duelo de preparación ante Islandia, el "Vasco" Aguirre también detalló los elementos que no deben tener los jugadores para ser considerados a representar a México en el Mundial.
"Los 18 que yo llame la semana que viene no tienen asegurado ir al Mundial, no, ninguno de esos 18. Quiero llamar a 18 porque hay tres compromisos el 7, el 10 y el 13 (de mayo) y tengo que llevar a 18 jugadores.
"A esos 18 se incorporará la gente de Europa que ya terminan el día 16 de mayo (...) yo espero para el día 16 ya tener a algunos europeos, con lo cual el viaje a Europa el día 18 ya dejaré a tres o quizá cuatro en México, así está el negocio.
"Antes jugaremos contra Inglaterra, contra Holanda, el tercer partido está ahí (Portugal) y al final contra Italia. Antes de Italia tengo que dar la lista de 23 jugadores, con lo cual serán dos o uno fuera", detalló el estratega.
Eso sí, dijo que será hasta el 1 de junio cuando se pueda decir que el Tri tiene definido una lista de jugadores para participar en el Mundial de Sudáfrica.

Ya casi nunca escribo
Pero hoy estoy muy de buenas, ire a comer por 3era vez en el día y hace un maravilloso Sol allá afuera.
No todo sale como uno quiere, no todas las cosas son siempre agradables, pero hay un gran número de ellas que si, y por esas, es que hay que dar gracias, ¿a qué? no lo sé, no puedo ser más ateo.
Finalmente lo que único de lo que estoy seguro es que no me quiero detener, por un lado no puedo evitar seguir mi camino y por otro lado, tengo que ser paciente, todo va salir bien, tengo que entender que las mejores cosas de la vida llegan cuando uno está listo y que además debemos valorarlas, entenderlas, cuidarlas y hacer que duren lo más posible.
La vida es un momento, hay que hacer que ese momento valga la pena.
No todo sale como uno quiere, no todas las cosas son siempre agradables, pero hay un gran número de ellas que si, y por esas, es que hay que dar gracias, ¿a qué? no lo sé, no puedo ser más ateo.

Make Your Office Eco-Friendly

According to a 2009 Gallup poll, the average employed adult works between 35-44 hours a week.
That's a huge amount of time to spend in the office, and yet the same people who change all their light bulbs to CFLs rarely give a second thought to getting their to-go coffee in a paper cup.
It only takes minutes to make your workspace a little more environmentally friendly. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Turn off the equipment when you leave for the day. Yes, even though Billy from accounting likes to stay late. An action as simple as turning off a 75-watt desktop monitor when you leave can save up to as much as 750 pounds of carbon emissions a year. A power strip can make turning all the equipment off easier at the end of the day, including coffee makers and microwaves. Just make sure the printer is powered down properly, as printers need to seal their cartridges before shutting off.
2. Buy green materials. Switching to recycled printer paper could save thousands of innocent trees a year -- and that's not including paper towels, toilet paper, water cups and all the other products that make working in an office a comfortable enterprise. Many offices have already stopped buying the formerly ubiquitous bottled water. Talk to your office manager about stocking recycled printer paper or replacing the break room cookies with locally grown fruit. And nix printing out separate agendas for everyone at the morning meeting -- slides or e-mailed agendas work just fine.
3. Green your duds. If you're not lucky enough to work in an office where jeans and Chuck Taylors are de rigeur, you already know that great thing about office clothes is that they're not supposed to be particularly trendy. Consider buying your crisply pressed trousers and blouses from thrift or consignment stores. Also, avoid dry-cleaning. Most dry cleaners use a chemical known as perchloroethylene, which is dangerous for both you and the environment. "Perc" is a known carcinogen that erodes the ozone layer and can easily contaminate groundwater. Most materials, like silk and wool, can be hand-washed. If you must go to a dry cleaner, look for one that uses green cleaning techniques, such as liquid carbon.
4. Telecommute. E-mailing, instant-messaging and videoconferencing have made working from home easier than ever before. Take advantage of it! Getting off the road even one day a week significantly reduces the amount of gasoline you burn, and you can even use the time you save on the trip to have an extra cup of coffee in your reusable ceramic mug. If telecommuting isn't a possibility for you, consider asking your boss about instituting a commuter credit program for use on public transportation, or putting up a bulletin board for carpooling.
5. Reusable Cups. Avoid using styrofoam cups for anything. Use a mug for coffee and a water bottle for water. If you recycle at home, you can recycle, reduce and reuse at the office too.
6. Recycle Everything. You can recycle everything from your paper and plastics that might come from the vending machines at work, or paper that might otherwise get thrown away. Some companies will even take your old office furniture to recycle the desks and chairs. I, Google

Google’s announcement that it intends to build and test superfast fiber-optic broadband networks in a few communities around the United States has a few locations pulling out all the stops to be chosen with some attention-getting stunts that scream to the search giant: “Pick me! Pick me!”
Some cities have (temporarily) renamed themselves with some sort of Google-ish name. Others have seen that and raised, promising to include “Google” in the name of every newborn. And the negative ads are starting to coming out, with some candidates exposing the shortcomings of others.
I understand the high temperature that this particular fever brings. Ultrahigh-speed broadband from a company such as Google would be massive. The thought of having internet speeds one hundred times faster than my current service is pretty damn appealing. So it didn’t really surprise me when my own hometown of Sarasota, Florida, joined the ranks of Duluth, Minnesota, or Topeka, Kansas, or Buffalo, New York, and others in some sort of publicity stunt to draw the attention of Google.
It’s not unfounded. Sarasota has a lot to offer and of course, I’m biased. The whole thing is a great use of social media, with hundreds of Facebook groups popping up and towns making their own viral videos. Trust me, if you’ve ever been to Central Florida along the coast you wouldn’t think that the populace here would even know what a viral video is, much less be able to comprehend making one.
So far, the most popular stunts have been Topeka renaming their town Google for one month, and Duluth making a set of tongue-in-cheek videos with their mayor proclaiming that every first-born child will be named either Google Fiber or Googlette Fiber. Sarasota has made their own video, showing that Duluth is very cold and Topeka doesn’t have much of a view, while Sarasota is paradise (Tip to Sarasota: Put the video on Google-owned YouTube instead of only Facebook. Just sayin’).
Sarasota currently ranks fifth on the list, while Grand Rapids, Michigan, leads the pack so far with over 20,000 votes. Sarasota’s stunt is renaming the popular park, City Island, to Google Island. Unoriginal at best, but the point is the same.
What is the point? The point is that Google has most likely already chosen a destination for their ultrahigh-speed broadband testing grounds. It’s going to be a town with fiber already in the ground, and it’s going to be a town that has something that will really test the broadband. Google is going to need the right kind of technology and industry in order to truly test their network. A hundred times faster than our current internet speeds is fast, really fast. As individuals, do we really need that type of speed in our homes? Well, of course we do. What kind of question is that?
A great side effect of Google Fiber even thinking about coming into a market such as Sarasota, where Comcast or Verizon are the only options, is that it will prompt both of those companies to adjust their current behavior when it comes to high-speed broadband. Comcast has mentioned restricting broadband, while Verizon is still limited to certain areas. Both these activities will have to change in order to compete. Comcast will have to keep unrestricted broadband, while Verizon might want to think about expanding past the highway, not to mention competitive pricing. Google plans on creating an open-access provider network; that is, they’ll provide their service to independent ISPs who will then sell to you, similar to how the phone system operates.

Google’s announcement that it intends to build and test superfast fiber-optic broadband networks in a few communities around the United States has a few locations pulling out all the stops to be chosen with some attention-getting stunts that scream to the search giant: “Pick me! Pick me!”
Some cities have (temporarily) renamed themselves with some sort of Google-ish name. Others have seen that and raised, promising to include “Google” in the name of every newborn. And the negative ads are starting to coming out, with some candidates exposing the shortcomings of others.
I understand the high temperature that this particular fever brings. Ultrahigh-speed broadband from a company such as Google would be massive. The thought of having internet speeds one hundred times faster than my current service is pretty damn appealing. So it didn’t really surprise me when my own hometown of Sarasota, Florida, joined the ranks of Duluth, Minnesota, or Topeka, Kansas, or Buffalo, New York, and others in some sort of publicity stunt to draw the attention of Google.
It’s not unfounded. Sarasota has a lot to offer and of course, I’m biased. The whole thing is a great use of social media, with hundreds of Facebook groups popping up and towns making their own viral videos. Trust me, if you’ve ever been to Central Florida along the coast you wouldn’t think that the populace here would even know what a viral video is, much less be able to comprehend making one.
So far, the most popular stunts have been Topeka renaming their town Google for one month, and Duluth making a set of tongue-in-cheek videos with their mayor proclaiming that every first-born child will be named either Google Fiber or Googlette Fiber. Sarasota has made their own video, showing that Duluth is very cold and Topeka doesn’t have much of a view, while Sarasota is paradise (Tip to Sarasota: Put the video on Google-owned YouTube instead of only Facebook. Just sayin’).
Sarasota currently ranks fifth on the list, while Grand Rapids, Michigan, leads the pack so far with over 20,000 votes. Sarasota’s stunt is renaming the popular park, City Island, to Google Island. Unoriginal at best, but the point is the same.
What is the point? The point is that Google has most likely already chosen a destination for their ultrahigh-speed broadband testing grounds. It’s going to be a town with fiber already in the ground, and it’s going to be a town that has something that will really test the broadband. Google is going to need the right kind of technology and industry in order to truly test their network. A hundred times faster than our current internet speeds is fast, really fast. As individuals, do we really need that type of speed in our homes? Well, of course we do. What kind of question is that?
A great side effect of Google Fiber even thinking about coming into a market such as Sarasota, where Comcast or Verizon are the only options, is that it will prompt both of those companies to adjust their current behavior when it comes to high-speed broadband. Comcast has mentioned restricting broadband, while Verizon is still limited to certain areas. Both these activities will have to change in order to compete. Comcast will have to keep unrestricted broadband, while Verizon might want to think about expanding past the highway, not to mention competitive pricing. Google plans on creating an open-access provider network; that is, they’ll provide their service to independent ISPs who will then sell to you, similar to how the phone system operates.

Why, really, did the 3-D movie trend start? Does anybody remember, before the trend began, thinking “You know the problem with movies? They’re too two-dimensional?” We didn’t think so. 3-D is so entrenched in the movie industry now that commercials for the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans actually point out that it is “also in 2-D” — as though that wasn’t the norm.
Now there’s talk of re-releasing classic films, converted to 3-D. You really would think people would learn a lesson from the hue and cry over colorization of old black and white films in the 1980s, but apparently you’d be wrong.
Here, then, are the top 10 movies that, for one reason or another, we at GeekDad fervently hope are never … what would the word be? “3-D-ized?” “Depth-ized?” We need a word that evokes the concept of things that looked fine to begin with getting alterations for superficial, faux-cosmetic reasons in order to earn more money. Perhaps something involving Cher.
10. Alien — The chest-burst scene is quite scary and gory enough, without the baby coming out of the screen towards the audience, thank you very much.
9. The Pirates of the Caribbean films — Orlando Bloom is wooden enough in two dimensions. And besides, with the exception of Jack, virtually all of the characters are one-dimensional, so displaying them in three really seems like overkill.
8. The Evil Dead films — Honestly, we’re just afraid someone might injure himself running away for fear of losing an eye to Bruce Campbell’s chin.
7. The Big Lebowski — While the bowling scenes might look pretty cool in 3-D, consider the scene where the thug pees on The Dude’s rug. Or the scene where Walter bites off a guy’s ear. Some things we’re better off not seeing in 3-D.
6. Die Hard — We’re pretty sure we’re better off not being any closer to the bloodied, sweaty John McClane. We’re afraid that people with overactive imaginations might start to think they can smell him, which is certainly not something to be wished for.
5. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — With all due respect to the late, great James Doohan, nobody wants Scotty’s stomach any closer to them than absolutely necessary. Plus, in 3-D, it would probably be pretty obvious that the closeups of the whales were done with models.
4. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial — If you or someone you love is the sort who gets emotional at movies, consider how much more powerful the emotions would be if E.T. weren’t just reaching out to Elliott, but to you.
3. The Lord of the Rings trilogy – It would be far too likely that all the careful perspective shots director Peter Jackson used to establish the differences in characters’ size would be lost, or at least badly screwed up, by the 3-D conversion process.
2. The Muppet Movie — This is a near-perfect movie, with, at most a few sour notes in an otherwise symphonic masterpiece. It works, as does anything involving Muppets, because it was meticulously filmed so the Muppets were utterly believable as characters. Converting it to 3-D would be bound to make the Muppets look more like they do in real life — that is to say, less like living beings.
1. The Star Wars saga — As though he hadn’t tinkered with the Star Wars films enough already, George Lucas has publicly stated his intentions to release 3-D versions of them. It wasn’t bad enough that he made Greedo shoot first; now he wants to mess around with the whole look and feel of the movies. If we haven’t made our case yet, we have but three more words for you: 3-D Jar Jar.
There are of course plenty more where those came from — feel free to add your own ideas in the comments. Interestingly, while compiling this list, a few films stuck out as ones that might actually be improved by 3-D conversion — look for a list of those next week.

No hace mucho tiempo, conocí a un grupo de jóvenes músicos que se hacen llamar en las Rocas. 5 talentos y dedicados visionarios, que buscan por medio de la música darle al mundo algo de regreso.
elR han ido forjando cuidadosamente canciones, y sonidos distintos y al mismo tiempo suenan tan familiares, como si siempre hubiesen estado con nosotros. Con mezclas de estilos como Jazz, Blues, Latin, Ska, Rock y algo de Bossa, generan una sensación de calidez, fiesta y festejo sin perder la sensibilidad ni el profesionalismo que exige la creación y la composición musical.
Con estilo propio y auténtico paso a paso están generando una alternativa musical única, digna de representar a su país y a Latinoamérica, estos muchachos están buscando, como todas las bandas, un lugar en el gusto de la gente.
Desde el primer ensayo que los escuché, supe que había algo en ellos que podía, y debía alcanzar la trascendencia en el ambito musical, puesto que la pasión y el trabajo que imprimen en sus melodías es digno de quien hace lo que le gusta para vivir.
Cuando me invitaron a colaborar con ellos, honestamente nunca hubo duda alguna y para mi es un honor y un compromiso dejarlo todo en el escenario junto a ellos, desde el backstage.
elR es un proyecto que cada vez más tiene el rostro de una realidad consolidada, en sus primeros encuentros con el público han recibido una respuesta inapelable, y en la cara de quienes los escuchan, me queda claro que el límite es el cielo.
Pero aún más importante es detenerme ahora y dejar que su música suene, que los acordes terminen de explicar, todo lo anterior a lo que me he venido refiriendo. No me crean pues probablemente es mi emoción la que este dirigiendo en este momento mis pasos y mis enunciados. Los invito a escucharlos en la primera oportunidad estamos programando nuestro siguiente concierto por lo que les pido no dejen de revisar la fanpage y el grupo en facebook, unanse y mantenganse al tanto de la evolución de esta banda, que creanme si no lo hacen desde ahora, hinundaremos la radio en poco tiempo.

Marcial Maciel abusó también de sus hijos
En el programa de Carmen Aristegui, dos jóvenes revelaron cómo el fundador de Los Legionarios de Cristo inventó una identidad para engañar a su madre.

La identidad “secreta” del fundador de los Legionarios de Cristo le ayudó a acercarse a Blanca Estela Lara Gutiérrez, con quien procreó dos hijos y adoptó de un matrimonio anterior de ella. Maciel registró a los niños como "González Lara".
En entrevista con la periodista Carmen Aristegui, la familia Gutiérrez habló por primera vez sobre la vida con “Raúl Rivas” y de los abusos sexuales que cometió con sus hijos.
Blanca Estela conoció a Maciel a finales de la década de 1970, en Tijuana, Baja California. “Lo idolatraba, alguna vez le dije ‘eres mi dios’”. Nunca se casaron, él viajaba continuamente para pasar un tiempo con su familia en Cuernavaca, Morelos (centro del país) y en ocasiones los llevaba con ellos.
“Para obtener el pasaporte, él me hacía pasar por lo difícil, porque un día era Rivas, otro González, pero siempre le creí, nunca dudé de él porque era una buena persona”.
Sus hijos Omar, José Raúl y Cristian también pensaban lo mismo. “Siempre lo vimos como el patriarca de la familia, nos decía que no fumáramos, que tuviéramos novia hasta los 25 años… nunca tuvimos una mala imagen de él”.
Ni las dudas saltaban cuando los extraños se dirigían a él.
“Cuando desayunábamos fuera —cuenta Omar— algunos le decían ‘buenos días, padre’, y teníamos la orden de retirarnos. Nunca nos preguntábamos por qué le decían ‘padre’, suponíamos que era porque tenía muchos hijos”.
Este miércoles, Omar y Raúl contaron que en esos casos, también se encuentran sus historias.
“En 1997, yo estaba haciendo deportes cuando en los puestos de periódicos vi la revista Contenido, vi su foto (de Marcial Maciel) y su nombre. No lo podía creer. Él estaba en Nueva York (EU) y le marqué: ‘¿Por qué dicen que eres esta persona?'. 'No les creas’, me dijo”.
Desde allí, le ordenó a su hijo Omar que esperara a un hombre, llamado Antonio, que lo llevaría a Cuernavaca, y comprara todos los ejemplares de la publicación. Y así lo hizo.
En el hogar de los "González Lara" no se tocó mucho el tema hasta dos años después cuando Raúl comenzó a sentirse “raro, dudé de mi sexualidad”.
“Primero le conté a mi mamá, le dije que mi padre había abusado de mí y de mi hermano Omar”.
El primer abuso, contó, fue en Colombia cuando tenía 7 años.
“Estaba acostado con él, como cualquier hijo, sin malicia, me bajé mi calzoncillo y me quiso violar. Se da cuenta, no me fuerza. Fue tan impresionante ese momento que hasta el día de hoy recuerdo qué desayuné ese día”.
En el caso de Raúl, le ocurrió en Madrid. “Nos encontrábamos en Madrid, en el mismo cuarto. Él se hacía el dormido, pero nos pedía que lo masturbáramos. Tomaba fotos y se las quedaba. Nos decía que su tío le hacía lo mismo, que ensayáramos con él”.
